Agenda For Tinubu As ECOWAS Chairman.

Hardly a month has passed since Bola Tinubu was inaugurated in as the President of Nigeria; nonetheless, he has already been given the responsibility of leading the Economic Community of West African States, also known as ECOWAS. Due to the fact that this honor was bestowed upon him so ne

It merely indicates that our subregion has acknowledged Nigeria as the true Big Brother as well as the Jerusalem/Mecca of West Africa and the continent as a whole. The fact that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was established on May 28, 1975 in Lagos, which was formerly the capital of Nigeria, lends historical credence to Nigeria's position as a key player in the region.
Additionally, its secretariat may be found in Abuja, which is located in our Federal Capital Territory, or FCT. The leadership of Nigeria in both West Africa and Africa as a whole is not a mere figurehead position. There are a lot of expectations placed on us. It is disheartening to realize that we are not meeting this expectation at this time.
During Tinubu's tenure, we anticipate that the original aim of ECOWAS will be realized, which is to establish a prosperous economic zone and an integrated market in West Africa. It is imperative that we look to the European Union, or EU, as a model.

Terrorism and the recent uptick in the number of military coups have both been named by Tinubu as among the most pressing issues facing the region. Let us also add the vast migrations to Europe and America, particularly the tragic travels over the Sahara Desert. Let us also add these migrations. In addition to this, we face the challenge of armed and aggressive nomadic herders who pose a significant risk to national security in Nigeria. It is imperative that we put an end to nomadism and conduct a thorough review of the ECOWAS agreement on the mobility of persons and products. It is one of the primary causes of disagreements.

One factor that contributes to all of these issues is poor governance. It is imperative that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), much like its counterparts in Europe, establish a consistent set of governance principles that will assist sister states in realizing their full potential in terms of both their people and natural resource endowments.

Terrorism and insecurity will be gradually reduced if measures are taken to combat poverty, unemployment, and a lack of access to basic essentials. Our people will be encouraged to remain in their home countries and to contribute to the economic development of those nations if the member states maintain good governance and respect for constitutional rule.

One of the primary reasons for the collapse of the ECOWAS was the continuous close ties that its member states maintained with their former colonial power even after they gained their independence. Because of this, regional commerce and the development of a common currency have been severely hampered. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has the potential to develop wealth because its population of over 413 million people is not too far behind that of the states that make up the European Union (447 million).

The fact that Nigeria is in disarray is another factor contributing to the fact that ECOWAS is in disarray. A country that is in a situation where it is almost certain to fail cannot lead an economic community in its region to prosperity. It used to be that Nigeria was the primary guarantor of security and stability in the area, but now days Nigeria is having a hard time protecting its own people from harm.

The work on the damage must initially begin in Nigeria. The buck stops with Tinubu at this point.
