How Akpabio, Abbas Floored Opponents In The 10th NASS Leadership

After months of political intrigue, permutations, and drama, the four APC Senate and House of Representatives leadership contenders won their elections yesterday.

Godswill Akpabio, Jibrin Barau, Tajudeen Abbas, and Benjamin Kalu are the four appointed candidates.

Akpabio won a hard-fought bout, and Abass defeated his two opponents.
In the Senate, where all 109 senators participated, Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority leader, defeated Senator Abdulaziz Yari (APC, Zamfara West) with 63 votes to 46.
Abass won 353 of 359 House of Representatives votes. Idris Wase and Aminu Jaji received three votes each.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated Akpabio and Abass on their victory and urged the incoming 10th National Assembly leadership that Nigerians want MPs to ease their economic burden.

Tinubu encouraged the National Assembly to cooperate with him to deliver democracy's rewards, saying that now that elections are done, they must govern to justify their mandate.

10 a.m. Last Monday, CNA Alhaji Sani Tambuwal informed legislators that the poll began at 8 a.m. yesterday.
After the Clerk to the National Assembly called for nominations, former Senate Leader Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) nominated Akpabio, who was seconded by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West).

When the CNA asked if there was another nomination, Senator Elisha Abbo (APC, Adamawa North) tried to nominate Senator Abdulaziz Yari, but Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) objected, saying Yari is not a ranking senator.

Monguno claimed Yari's nomination violated Senate Standing Order 3, 2020 as amended. Senators-elect supporting Yari yelled "No!" No!

The CNA overruled Monguno and decided that Yari's candidacy did not violate Senate norms or the 1999 Constitution.

Yari was seconded by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South). Yari beat Akpabio 46 to 63 in the secret ballot election.
After Akpabio was declared President of the 10th Senate, the CNA called for nominations for Deputy Senate President. Senator David Umahi (APC, Ebonyi South) proposed Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North) and was seconded by Saliu Mustapha (APC, Kwara Central).

Senator Barau was named Deputy Senate President by the CNA without further nominations.
The CNA went to the House of Representatives to elect the presiding officers after his Senate work.

Senate President Akpabio said, “Having won elections and inaugurated, we should see ourselves as Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not that of political parties.”
"This Senate and by extension, the 10th National Assembly, needs to collaborate with the President Bola Tinubu-led executive arm of government on improved revenue generation," Akpabio said.

“President Tinubu, as executive governor of Lagos State from May 1999 to May 2007, raised the state's internally generated revenue, IGR, from below N1billion to between N50billion and N61billion every month.

Thus, we must pass legislation to increase money from new sources.

He suggested that the 10th Senate strengthen legislative space and support beneficial federal policies like the gasoline subsidy withdrawal.

After his remarks, Akpabio asked the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, to adjourn to Wednesday, which he did and was seconded by Senator Ali Ndume.
Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), former Deputy Senate Majority Leader and Head of Media of Senator Yari's Campaign Organisation, said, “The election was free and fair without much-anticipated drama. That distinguishes the Senate.
“The animosity and fear of the last two days vanished. Parliament and democracy are seen as people embrace in the hall. We refused to be intimidated by any enforcement and imposition, so we said there must be an election and those who came up with the idea of the theater party and the sitting government had the day. The election was free and fair, as I expected.
I represented the minority caucus, not my party, and you could see we didn't all vote the same. Some parliamentarians negotiated. In six months, we will unite by putting the nation first.”
Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo West), a Senate Presidency aspirant, said, “I feel happy that members of the 10th Senate have made their choice, have elected their President and Deputy President. Democracy is deepening. I think we can start strong because Nigerians expect a lot from us.

Kamaru Ogunlana, the DCNA of the House of Representatives, began the electoral process before his principle, Magaji Tambuwal, returned from the Senate to finish it.

The All Progressives APC preferred Abbas and Kalu for the offices.

Idris Wase, Aminu Jaji, Ado Doguwa, Aliyu Betara, Miriam Onuoha, Yusuf Gagdi, and others formed a Group of 7 (G7) to oppose his nomination after their revelation on May 8.

Betara, Gagdi, and Doguwa joined the joint ticket at the 10th Assembly's twilight, but Wase and Jaji refused to give up.

Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the 9th House Majority Leader from Kano State, recommended Abass for speaker at the inauguration. Nnolim Nnaji, Nkanu East/West, seconded him. Abbas accepted his nomination.
Ogunlana then inquired about "further nominations".
The chamber shouted "no, no".

When Rep. Tijani Kayode of Offa Federal Constituency in Kwara State nominated Wase, it calmed down.
Mohammed Abdulmumuni, representing Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency in Nasarawa State, seconded the nomination.
Ahmed Yusuf Doro, Katsina Bindawa/Mani federal constituency representative, nominated Jaji again.

Mohammed Aliyu Ibrahim from Katsina's Malumfashi/Kafur federal constituency seconded it.

In the lack of further nominations, parliamentarians freely declared their vote for a candidate in each state. The clerk, Tambuwal, announced that Abbas received 353 votes and Wase and Jaji three apiece.
Tambuwal declared Abbas the winner and returned as House speaker. The chamber erupted at the declaration. Kalu became deputy speaker after the clerk called Babajimi Benson of Lagos State's Ikorodu Federal constituency nominated Kalu for deputy speaker. "Kalu, Kalu" erupted after his nomination.
Yobe State's Damaturu/Gujba/Gulani/Tarmuna federal constituency's Kadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim seconded the nomination.
The clerk inquired, "Are there other nominations?" after Kalu accepted.” The clerk declared Kalu elected unopposed after hearing "no no" shouts.
Their two coworkers nominated and seconded them. Votes were personal.
Due to the death of Taraba State member-elect Isma’ila Maihanchi, 359 members took their oath.
After the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections, he died.
Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila handed over to Abbas at the ceremony.

"On behalf of the members of the Ninth Assembly and I believe the 10th Assembly, I congratulate you on your election as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly," Gbajabiamila stated during the rite. Good luck. Quite difficult. From my experience, you'll perform well. Your members. As 9th Assembly speaker, I hand over the notes for them. I hope this helps you continue from where I left.”
I'll be impartial—Abbas
Abbas stated his administration would be just, fair, and governed by the constitution in his acceptance speech.
He promised to treat all political parties equally.
He said: “This victory is not just about me; it is about all of us coming together as a united House to serve the Nigerian people diligently. It's about honoring our trust and working hard to deliver good government and effective representation.
“The speakership campaign of the past few months was democracy in action. Today, all of that has happened, and we must move forward and work together for our people's sake.
“I take this mandate seriously. Today, I promise to treat everyone equally, regardless of our differences. I'll run a House you'll love. I will follow the Nigerian Constitution and House Rules. We think nation-building is a shared effort, hence we welcome APC, PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, APGA, SDP, ADC, and YPP members.

“My dear colleagues, I invite you all to be on board for the next four years as we embark on this Nigerian Project to renew the hope of our people,” Abbas said.
"Under my watch, the 10th House shall sustain and even surpass the gains of the 9th House," Abbas declared. My prayer. We will work together. We'll make changes for Nigerians. The 10th House of Representatives' legislative agenda will be announced in a few weeks.

“We will cooperate with the executive branch while upholding checks and balances. Transparency, responsibility, and legality shall guide our collaboration.”
In a statement he personally signed, President Tinubu congratulated the lawmakers and reminded them that disagreements may arise but will not be out of malice, ill will, or a desire to diminish the National Assembly or any individual member.

He said, “I heartily congratulate them and also rejoice with the new Deputy Senate President Jibril Barau and House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for their well-deserved victories.

“Being elected by their peers as presiding officers and leading the National Assembly is a great honor and huge responsibility. I hope you'll live up to your members' and Nigerians' trust.
“I wish Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Honourable member Idris Wase, and Honourable Aminu Jaji who enriched the leadership election the best and a successful tenure in the 10th National Assembly.

“I urge them to continue their leadership contest enthusiasm in serving their constituents and Nigeria.

“My congratulations to all National Assembly members, across party lines, who, today, enlisted into the service of the blessed people of our great country.”

He added, “We have all been called upon and accepted the responsibility to diligently and faithfully serve our fatherland with the oath we took. It's time to speed up governance for Nigeria.

“As your President, I will work with the National Assembly transparently. Nigerians want senators and Rep members to pass legislation and oversee government performance to improve their quality of life.

“We may disagree while working together. We won't disagree to hurt the National Assembly or any member.

“People across our nation expect so much from us. They want us to help them financially. They want us to end insecurity so rural farmers can grow our food.
