Labour Party, Peter Obi Refused To Pay Needed Fees To Collect Documents They Need As Exhibits –Electoral Body, INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is pointing fingers at the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for the delay in releasing of various papers related to the presidential election in Sokoto and Rivers states.

INEC is blaming Labour Party and Obi for failing to pay the requisite fees needed to collect the document for exhibition at the court.

Counsel for the petitioners (LP and Obi), Livy Uzoukwu, informed the court that INEC was refusing his clients accessibility to election documents.
The records, according to the lawyer, were necessary as exhibits in order to present their case.
Notwithstanding submitting five letters as well as visiting the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Uzoukwu claims that the electoral board is yet to deliver the records.
According to the lawyer, he also met with the head of the electoral body, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to address the issue but that also failed.

He requested the court to order INEC to provide the petitioners with the documents, which includes Form EC8A.
But INEC blamed Obi and his party of refusing to pay the needed money for the certification of the needed election records.

He blamed the delay on their refusal to make the payments that were needed.

During the resumed hearing of the case of Peter Obi and LP, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), INEC's lead counsel, told the Presidential Election petition Court (PEPC) that his client was willing and ready to provide the requested records once the required fees were paid.
Mahmoud cited a letter from the petitioners' lawyer, Uzoukwu, in which he stated that his clients were unwilling to pay the N1.5 million demanded for the certification of the document in reference to Sokoto State. He accused the Labour Party of leaving a meeting called by the parties to sort out data to be offered as exhibits in the case.

The attorneys for the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s 'President-elect' and 'Vice President-elect,' Woke Olanipekun (SAN) and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), pointed out that it was clear from Mahmoud's account that the holdup in the release of the remaining records was due to the petitioners' failure to pay the expected fees.
The court of appeals has extended the petition's pre-hearing proceedings until Friday.
