Chelsea will seek relief from their recent struggles in the Premier League when they play host to Brighton Hove Albion in the EFL Cup this Wednesday.

In their previous match, Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa, while Brighton Hove Albion, on the other hand, secured a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth, showcasing their strong form.

Chelsea's season has taken a downturn, with another disappointing loss at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Malo Gusto's red card in the 58th minute was followed by Ollie Watkins's 73rd-minute winner. In the 2023-24 season, Mauricio Pochettino's team has endured three defeats out of six Premier League games, managing only one win. Chelsea's goal-scoring has also been limited, with only Luton Town and Burnley having scored fewer goals in the Premier League this season, totaling five. Consequently, Chelsea currently sits in 14th place in the Premier League table, trailing third-placed Brighton by 10 points and having only a four-point cushion above the relegation zone. Furthermore, the 2020-21 Champions League winners find themselves nine points behind the top four.

Chelsea's EFL Cup campaign began with a shaky victory over AFC Wimbledon last month, where they had to come from behind to secure a narrow 2-1 win against the fourth-tier team. Therefore, Pochettino will be eager for an improved performance in their upcoming match.

Conversely, Brighton has had a remarkable start to the season, winning five out of six Premier League matches, keeping them within reach of Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the standings. Following back-to-back 3-1 victories over Newcastle United and Manchester United, Roberto De Zerbi's team suffered a 3-2 loss against AEK Athens in the Europa League last week. Nevertheless, they swiftly bounced back with a 3-1 triumph over Bournemouth during the weekend.

During a match where the teams were tied at 1-1 after the first half, Kaoru Mitoma came off the bench to score two goals in the second half, securing a comeback for Brighton. Impressively, Brighton has managed to score at least three goals in five of their six league matches this season.

Thanks to De Zerbi's creative attacking strategy, Brighton currently leads the Premier League in goals scored this season, with a total of 18 goals in their first six matches. As a result, they approach the match against struggling Chelsea with confidence, aiming to add to their opponent's recent difficulties.
