APC Considers ‘Merger With Opposition’ As Chidoka Warns Of PDP’s Extinction

Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that political parties in opposition may, in the not too distant future, unite with the party that is currently in power.

Ganduje, while speaking to reporters at the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja, stated that he will soon come up with a plan for accomplishing the goal.

It will most definitely increase our party's chances, particularly in 2027. Not only that, but in addition to that, we will soon be releasing a new strategy that will raise the number of followers. All levels of officials, including those affiliated with the APC as well as those affiliated with other political parties, will be included in this. I can promise you that within a very short amount of time, a number of the political parties would even combine their efforts with the APC. Ganduje stated that this activity was being conducted in secret.

He also provided some insight into the discussions that he had with the minister-designate Nyesom Wike earlier in the week when Wike visited his residence in Abuja. Wike had previously served as governor of Rivers State.

The visit by Wike, who is a stalwart of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), had added fire to the notion that the former governor was set to switch parties.

'You know, Wike is an honorable minister-designate,' he told them. Because I was trying to find him and congratulate him on his achievement, he came and we talked about it.  In addition to that, he came to congratulate me on my achievement.

"It was brought to our attention that when he is appointed full minister, he will put in a lot of effort to advance the ministry that has been entrusted to him, and he is prepared to work together. But we didn't talk about the question of whether or not he would join the APC when we were together. This problem will surface at a later time."

This came about as a result of a warning made by Osita Chidoka, a chieftain of the PDP and a former minister of aviation, that the party could become extinct if urgent reforms are not implemented.

During his appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily, which took place the day before, he made this revelation and emphasized that the party had lost several of its strongholds to the Labour Party (LP) in the most recent election.

He stated that, "The PDP is a government that was in power for a total of sixteen years." It behaves more like a party that serves in government than an opposition party would. And it has been eight years before we have even begun to comprehend this. We are aware of the fact that it has not been a full four years since our last visit...or that we will be returning the very following day.

"Right now, we are starting to see that the PDP itself requires some kind of change. To be able to start playing the role of opposition, it needs to refresh and reimagine itself. This is despite the fact that we have a politician serving as president.

He continued by saying, "If the PDP doesn't get its act together, it will be a party of no more." Therefore, it is imperative that we come to our senses, smell the coffee, locate the kind of leadership that will adequately represent us in the environment of the opposition, and go to work doing the duties associated with the opposition.

"The effort of mobilization and the adoption of technology is required of us. The past four years have imparted onto us the sour knowledge that it is possible for a new party to emerge and steal PDP strongholds within the course of an electoral cycle.

Simon Lalong, who is currently being considered for the position of minister but previously served as governor of Plateau State, has defended the selection of Ganduje as the party's national chairman, despite the objections of some party members.

He stated, "Ganduje had the position of governor. When we look at his background, we always claim that he is the most experienced politician that we have working for us because of the length of his political career. Someone who has been in the public sector for a very long time is him. After rising through the ranks to become permanent secretary, commissioner, and longest serving deputy governor, he eventually assumed the role of governor.

"With the amount of experience you have, what else do you require when it comes to party matters? Therefore, given that he is present today, we have faith in him. And it is not just the responsibility of one person; whenever he gets the chance, he engages in a great deal of consultation, and we are always prepared to assist him.

His former colleagues who served on the board of governors alongside him are always available for work of this nature. Because of this, we are coming together to provide him with as much assistance as possible so that the celebration can also be successful.
