NEWCASTLE CLOSE IN ON CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT WITH RESOUNDING WIN OVER BRIGHTON

With goals from Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes in stoppage time, Newcastle blew over Brighton and moved closer to playing in the Champions League.

Wilson scored his 18th goal of the season and then set up Guimaraes to seal a 4-1 win in front of a delirious crowd of 52,122 at St. James' Park after Deniz Undav had brought the Seagulls back into the game with an own goal and a towering header by Dan Burn.

If Liverpool loses to Aston Villa on Saturday, Eddie Howe's team will finish in the top four regardless. Even a draw could be enough due to their superior goal difference. However, they can finish the job themselves by beating struggling Leicester at home on Monday night.

Partially due to the absence of Levi Colwill, Alexis Mac Allister, Julio Enciso, and Evan Ferguson from the starting lineup, but largely due to the relentless pressure exerted by their opponents, this was not the Brighton which effectively ended Arsenal's title challenge on Sunday.

As the Magpies settled in, Fabian Schar fired a free kick straight at the appreciative Jason Steele in the ninth minute, and Joe Willock had an early cross clawed away from Miguel Almiron, who had his effort stopped at source.

Seconds later, Willock's shot from Almiron's pull-back went just wide, and after the former Arsenal midfielder had returned the favor, the Paraguayan international cleared the target by some distance from a tight angle.

Despite goalie Nick Pope being challenged for the first time by Danny Welbeck's 16th-minute shot after Kaoru Mitoma picked him out, the Magpies started strong and the Seagulls struggled to manoeuvre their way out of their own half, much to the annoyance of manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Trippier hammered the latest in a string of corners to the near post with 23 minutes played, and Undav could only glance his effort at clearing it into his own net.

After the visitors failed to clear another Trippier corner, Burn attempted a crisp shot on the turn in the 34th minute, but his attempt was deflected wide. Mitoma then tried his luck with an audacious shot in the 37th minute, but his drive was easily saved by Pope.

Tripper took full advantage of a decision which did go his side's way, looping a free-kick into the head of Burn, who smashed it past the helpless Steele, while Joelinton was still fuming at a Moises Caicedo tackle that went unpunished by referee Robert Jones.

Within five minutes of the restart, Almiron missed a golden opportunity to put the game beyond the visitors when he shot straight at Steele from Willock's knock-down, and the miss cost them dearly when Undav capitalized on Billy Gilmour's through ball by beating Pope to make amends for his earlier contribution.

We rapidly threw in Mac Allister, Enciso, and Ferguson, and then Willock limped off, holding his hamstring, and Elliot Anderson jumped in.

Burn seemed to have his shirt tugged, but the home team's penalty call was overturned, and Steele made a fantastic stop to deny Alexander Isak's header to keep the pressure on.

As the game opened up, Enciso sent Caicedo's cross wide of Pope's far post, but the Magpies mounted a stunning late attack to seal the victory.
