Abure Resumes, Says No Factions In LP

Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, and three other national executive members declared their return to the party secretariat on Thursday.

The development comes one month after they were forbidden from posing themselves as party national officers by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The judge decided that Abure, his National Secretary, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim, and National Organising Secretary, Clement Ojukwu, as well as one other person, should no longer be recognized as party executives.

The injunction was approved in a separate application presented by Chief James Ogwu Onoja (SAN), who notified the court that the concerned national officers had fabricated multiple FCT High Court documents in order for them to carry out illegal substitutions in the recently held 2023 general elections.

He stated that such documents included receipts, seals, as well as court affidavits, which he alleged were used by party officials to commit crimes.

Nevertheless, during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Abure expressed the official return of all suspended national executive members to the secretariat following the Court of Appeal's stay of proceedings.

Notwithstanding the fact that Bashiru Apapa took over as acting National Chairman following Abure's suspension, he refuted allegations that the Labour Party had become factionalized.

Abure and Apapa sections clashed on Wednesday at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja, where the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are contesting the appearance of All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu as the victor of the February 25 presidential election.

On his comeback on Thursday, Abure stated, "It has become important for me to address this press conference in order to correctly place the legal issues surrounding the party's leadership in proper view." It is important to emphasize unequivocally that the Labour Party has no factions. It has only one leadership, which is the National Working Committee, which is led by myself, Barrister Julius Abure."
