If You Love Squid Game, Try Out These 6 (Mainly Korean) Films

Here are a handful of my personal favorites, as well as where you can find them. Unless you've been living under a rock like me until last week, you've probably heard about Netflix's spectacular show "Squid Game."

It's no secret that death game shows, or performances featuring peril in general, are popular in the western world. So it's no surprise that Squid Game became so popular.

So, if you're looking for something to fill the vacuum left by finishing Squid Game, here's a list of more outstanding series with lovely characters and sad situations.

1. Cube No

This is the only western media on my list, but I couldn't leave it out because it reminded me of Squid Game.

This 1997 Canadian film follows a group of people who wake up in a maze of cube-shaped rooms with no equipment or clues as to why they've ended up there. The group loses their sanity as each new area reveals new fears and dangers, and their distrust intensifies. We're left wondering how they'll get away, and it serves as a good reminder to pay attention in arithmetic class.

Cube is available on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

2. My Name

This show is already at the top of the Netlfix charts in America, and it's likely filling a vacuum left by the end of Squid Game for a lot of people.

This show follows a young girl who will go to any length to avenge and bring justice to her father after he was murdered. After joining a criminal gang, she uncovers dark secrets on her quest for justice, but she furthers her plot by becoming an undercover cop. There's also a lot of danger, societal issues, and fantastic characters in this show. It will keep you on the edge of your seat as you grow to care about our protagonist as she finds herself in more dangerous situations.

3. Night in Paradise

The story revolves around a mobster who is far too kind for his own good. He becomes a target after a tragic occurrence with related gangs, and is instructed to hide out on Jeju Island. His caregivers in Jeju are a mysterious woman with her own issues and her uncle. This film will take you on an emotional roller coaster as you hope for a happy ending for these two in an unfair world.

Also available on Netflix is A Night in Paradise.

4. Kingdom

Kingdom, another popular Netflix show, is a thrilling zombie thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

This show takes place during Korea's infamous Joeson period. The king has become a zombie, but the self-centered queen and her father keep it hidden from the rest of the kingdom. In addition, the country is experiencing a zombie outbreak, and the crown prince is being pursued by the royal guards for attempting to live independently. This show is ideal for fans of suspense and adrenaline rushes.

Kingdom is available on Netflix.

5. Mouse

This is a fantastic show that induced fear and stress in me with each new episode. That may sound negative, but if you're looking for a good tale, this is the K-drama to watch.

The plot of our novel revolves around the history of a "famous" serial murderer and how the government originally planned to test pregnant women to discover if their child possessed the "murdering" gene. In this story, there are murders, geniuses, and befuddled characters, and we have no idea who our primary character is. Our hero, a police officer, appears to be faultless, but is he the same child who murdered his family all those years ago? You'll never know who's the nice man and who's the bad person in this show.

On Rakuten Viki.com, you may watch Mouse with English subtitles.

6. Sabaha

Is this a face you recognize? It's because it's Squid Game's beloved main character.

This film is a little darker, with themes of demons and the like, therefore it's appropriate for fans of films like The Exorcist. A little girl has a twin sister in this film, but she and her family are excluded from social life since they bring "bad luck" to the hamlet. They go through their own challenges, but when horrible things start to happen, priests and police are called in to help. It'll make you feel scared, just in time for Halloween.

I'm always willing to share more, so like if you'd like to see more!
