Oliseh: How Nigeria players were frustrated with Okocha's dribbling

The 47-year-old explains why Super Eagles players would turn to him after their famous midfielder dribbled

In response to a dribble by one of the Super Eagles' most renowned midfielders, the 47-year-old reveals

Former Super Eagles midfielder Austin 'Jay-Jay' Okocha's excessive dribbling irked several of his teammates, according to Nigeria veteran Sunday Oliseh.

During their time together with the Super Eagles, Oliseh and Okocha played alongside one another, and Oliseh has said that he was the only one the Bolton star could turn to when his dribbling got out of hand.
In the Athlete's Podcast, Special Delivery, Emmanuel Babayaro and Matthew Edafe with Oliseh, Oliseh remarked that Jay-Jay was a "tough guy to play with, as teammates, as defensive players," as reported by Completesports.

"However, I was able to play with Jay-Jay because we had a mutual understanding." Let me tell you about one specific game I played. We were playing and Jay-Jay was doing what he does best, and the Nigerian supporters were ecstatic.

Even when we disagreed, every member on our squad had the power to rule the roost. On Sunday, my defenders would always request me to inform them about the awful things their teammates had done in the group.

Jay-Jay was aware that Oliseh was the only one who could tell him "My guy, release the ball," and he would do so, he said.

Taribo West's outburst towards Okocha was also disclosed by Oliseh.

Oliseh went on to say, "He was doing it one specific game and we lost the ball." While Taribo [West] was going wild over him, the ball was coming down the court.

'Hey my buddy, I'm weary of running,' I informed him after he dropped the ball for the third time. When he continued to dribble, he lost the ball the next time. We parted ways. They were inches away from scoring because I allowed the opposition to have the ball in the end zone. Suddenly, Taribo became irrational and he ran ahead of me, so I had to catch him and bring him back. Taribo is not a prankster. He has a competitive nature and a strong desire to succeed. "Winning is all he cares about."

At the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, Olusegun Oliseh scored three goals for Nigeria and appeared in 63 international matches. In addition, he was a member of the 1996 Olympic gold medal winning squad.
