England ‘Heartbroken’ By World Cup Final Defeat, Says Captain Bright

Despite not being at their best in Sydney, England's captain Millie Bright revealed that the Lionesses were devastated by their 1-0 loss to Spain in the final of the Women's World Cup on Sunday. The match was played in Australia.

Olga Carmona scored the game's lone goal, and Spain was able to hold off the reigning European champions. However, Spain may have won by a larger margin if the goalkeeper for England, Mary Earps, hadn't stopped a penalty kick taken by Jennifer Hermoso in the second half.

"Those females are really incredible. At the beginning of the competition, we were met with a great deal of criticism; some people even stopped believing in us, but we never stopped believing in ourselves.

"We had complete faith, but in football, sometimes the game works in your favor and other times it works against you.

"We were able to compete in the World Cup final. We'll look back on this day and being in second place with gratitude in a few weeks, but right now it's difficult to accept because we're winners and we want to win.

Lauren Hemp came close to giving England an early lead in their first World Cup final appearance in the women's game, but her shot was blocked by the goal post. However, after Carmona's goal broke the tie after 29 minutes, Spain faced little to no difficulty in the game.

Bright continued by saying that "in the first half, we weren't at our best." "In the second half, we were able to definitely get back on our feet, show our fight, show our character, and we had opportunities."

"We hit the bar, but we just didn't have that final edge today, and obviously they put theirs in the back of the net," said the coach. "They put theirs in the back of the net."
