APC Governors Pledge Judicious Use Of N2tr Fuel Subsidy Windfall

Yesterday, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) made a commitment to ensure efficient use of the additional monies that have become available as a result of the withdrawal of gasoline subsidies.

In July 2023, the three branches of government will divide a record N1.959 trillion, which is more than three times as much as the N655.93 billion they received in May and more than three times as much as the N786.161 billion they received in June.
The chairman of the forum, Hope Uzodimma, acknowledged that there will be extra money available to the 36 states, but he did not provide any specifics of the sum involved.

After a meeting of the forum members in Abuja that was held behind closed doors, he addressed the media and said the following: "We are aware that the result of the removal of fuel subsidy will increase the volume of money that would be received by us, and we are working with the Federal Government to ensure that it will be utilized in a manner in which citizens of the country will be happy."

He went on to say that it was positive that Abdullahi Adamu and Iyiola Omisore had decided to step down from their positions as national chairman and secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"We applaud the prudence that they have displayed in what they have done. They did a good job for us during the party. We are pleased with the service, and there is harmony among the attendees. According to Uzodimma, there is no state of emergency within the party.

Salihu Lukman, the national vice chairman of the party's North West region, has spoken out against rumors that steps are being made to install Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State, as the party's national chairman.
In a statement, Lukman expressed his disapproval of efforts to impose Ganduje on the APC, arguing that such efforts smack of insensitivity to the interests and ambitions of party members.

He stated that, "As things stand right now, the only blocs that are actively participating in the negotiation to produce and engage leaders of the APC are those of the president and the governors." Already, there is talk among the governors' group that Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is being considered for the role of succeeding Adamu. This is one of the rumors that has emerged.

"If this is true, it only suggests a lack of sensitivity and a taking for granted of members of the party," the author says. This should not be construed as an attack on the character of Ganduje.

"This is because making such a choice will completely distort the zoning arrangement that informed the current configuration of the leadership of the National Assembly."
