Animoca Brands CEO Says "Triple-A Console-Style" Web3 Games Launch in 2024

Web3 game creators have mostly released monetized "play-to-earn" games in recent years.

Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yung recently said that he expects to see more "triple-A console-style" Web3 games launch in 2024. He cited games like Life Beyond, Devourers, and Phantom Galaxies as current examples of this evolving category.

Yung believes that the Web3 gaming space, which is currently dominated by play-to-earn and casual gaming titles, will witness a shift towards high-quality, immersive gaming experiences. He believes that the blockchain technology that powers Web3 games will allow developers to create more engaging and rewarding experiences for players.

Yung also pointed out that the rise of Web3 gaming is being driven by several factors, including the increasing popularity of NFTs, the growing demand for decentralized gaming platforms, and the increasing availability of funding for Web3 gaming projects.

It remains to be seen whether Yung's prediction will come true, but his comments suggest that the Web3 gaming space is poised for significant growth in the years to come.

Yung's interview:

  • He believes that the blockchain technology that powers Web3 games will allow developers to create more engaging and rewarding experiences for players.
  • He pointed out that the rise of Web3 gaming is being driven by several factors, including the increasing popularity of NFTs, the growing demand for decentralized gaming platforms, and the increasing availability of funding for Web3 gaming projects.
  • He said that Animoca Brands is actively investing in the development of triple-A console-style Web3 games.

Web3 game creators have mostly released monetized "play-to-earn" games in recent years. However, Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, predicts a shift in the industry by 2024. He anticipates that in 2019, Web3 businesses will release more blockchain-based games akin to triple-A console games. There are currently just a handful of games that can be classified as such. The Devourers, Phantom Giesalaxies, and Life Beyond are all examples.

Yung predicts that the Animoca Brands-funded project Life Beyond will be ready for a complete release sometime in the first quarter of 2019. The team's minds had already created several successful Web2 games. Founder of Life Beyond Benjamin Charbit, for instance, worked on Assassin's Creed at Ubisoft. Because of this, Yung thinks the new game will appeal to Web2 players, who have traditionally been opposed to the use of NFTs in video games.

The CEO of Animoca Brands drew parallels between the current climate and that of the introduction of mobile gaming in 2009. Many players at the time considered playing video games on their smartphones to be a waste of time. However, they adapted to the new norm over time.

Yung now claims his company is implementing a strategy that integrates blockchain technology and conventional games to recruit players from the Web2 platform.

Aims for the Virtual Worlds by Animoca Brands

The creators of the monetizable online game The Sandbox, Animoca Brands, are eyeing the metaverse as a potential new market. Yung claims his company, in contrast to other digital behemoths advocating for centralized platforms, would construct a decentralized metaverse. He goes on to say that a virtual world does not qualify as a "metaverse" if it is not interoperable and was not developed using blockchain technology.

Yung Discusses the Present State of International Regulations

The head of Animoca Brands is unhappy because of the regulatory ambiguity in the US. He argues that unless US authorities issue clear crypto standards, his company will not be focusing there.

However, Yung is pleased with the French response. He asserts that local authorities in the area rarely go after cryptocurrency businesses. As a result, many Web 3.0 programmers have relocated to France. Yung hopes that France, under the leadership of Emmanuel Macron, will become a major Web3 Hub internationally soon.
