Who should Manchester United sign if they are unable to complete their dream? Harry Kane transfer

What if Manchester United doesn't get to sign Harry Kane this summer?

Harry Kane is the primary summer transfer target for Manchester United, and with good reason.

United has struggled to find a consistent goal scorer for years, and Erik ten Hag's transition this season would not have been successful without the resurgence of Marcus Rashford. The manager has had to make do with a dearth of strikers, let alone one who can score.

Anthony Martial has missed most of the season due to injury, Cristiano Ronaldo was never comfortable with Ten Hag's system and eventually quit in a huff, and Wout Weghorst puts in the effort but has trouble finding the back of the net. Kane would contribute both offensive and defensive prowess, averaging over 20 goals per season over the past nine years.

However, getting his signature won't be a breeze. Kane is in the final year of his contract, but Spurs are not likely to let him leave without a fight, especially since Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has a longstanding policy of not doing business with local rivals.

If United is unable to sign Kane, they still have choices. The following is an answer provided by MEN'S SPORTS writers. [rb_related title="More Read" style="light" total="4"]

A. S. Luckhurst

If United were able to steal Kane away from Daniel Levy, it would be a minor coup. If Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Kane, he would have to "kill" Levy, according to someone who has worked with the two of them. I think he was just being funny.

United has not signed anyone from Tottenham since 2008, England has mid-June internationals, Kane has downtime, and Levy is stubborn, so a deal for Kane would not be quick. It would be extremely surprising if the "saga" did not continue into August. If the Spurs end up in fourth place, it might be too late for them to make the playoffs.

United should look elsewhere because of Kane's age (he'd be 30 if he does pull on a United shirt) and the wear and tear from almost a decade of Premier League football and five taxing international tournaments.

In Napoli, one of the best teams in Europe, you'll find the spectacular striker Victor Osimhen leading the charge. There's a chance he'll only shine for a single season, but he's gotten better with each passing year in Naples and showed flashes of promise in his lone season with Lille. He has everything needed to be a top-tier striker at a club with higher standards.

Napoli, like Tottenham, is notoriously difficult to negotiate with, and the Italian club is notorious for keeping players they do not want to sell. If anything, Osimhen would be an even bigger coup than Kane.

I can only think of Victor Osimhen.

It could be argued that, given his Premier League experience, Kane would be the best bet for immediate goals, but pursuing him would entail a massive transfer fee, lengthy transfer talks, and a shorter shelf life than Osimhen.

Rather, this summer's focus should be on signing a younger player who can serve as the team's long-term offensive leader without needing to be replaced for the foreseeable future. [rb_related title="More Read" style="light" total="4"]

It would seem that Osimhen would be a great addition to the team, not only because he is only 24, but also because he has shown himself to be a well-rounded striker this year.

The Nigerian has scored 25 goals in 29 games, and he has scored every possible type of goal. He appears to be of the same elite striker caliber as Kane and Erling Haaland, and he could challenge them next season.

Murphy, Daniel.

Victor Osimhen, in their current form, would be an ideal addition, and because of his younger age, he might even be a more astute choice than Harry Kane. While he has Premier League experience, the England captain has played over 400 more games than him.

I would take a slightly different approach rather than shell out what would likely be well over the $100 million mark to acquire the Napoli player. This year, the Spurs have some leverage to prevent Kane from leaving, but in 2024, when his contract is up, they will have no say. United should consider saving their money if they want to get Kane for free this year.

The team could then turn to a slightly less expensive but still extremely talented player to help them get through the next year. Erik ten Hag has watched Mohammed Kudus improve at Ajax and now considers him a favorite player. The 22-year-old can carry the load up top and has been a reliable goal scorer this season, with 18 to his name. However, his versatility also allows him to play a more central, creative role, or even on the wings. If Kane showed up a year later, he wouldn't be forced out of the team because he wouldn't be able to contribute. It may not even be necessary to hire Kane if everything goes swimmingly. There is the possibility of harm. Kane will be more difficult to acquire when he is offering his services for free, and Osimhen may move on to smash it for another team. There's no harm in being patient if Kane is the man Ten Hag truly desires.
