On Sunday at 3:00 p.m. local time, hosts Qatar will face off against Ecuador in the first game of the extremely controversial 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.

The team captained by Felix Sanchez Bas is making its debut on the world stage, while the South American nation is making its comeback to the World Cup finals after an absence of eight years.

A little over a week after Sepp Blatter's admission that Qatar should not have been awarded the World Cup in the first place, the 2022 hosts hold the distinct honor of kicking off the latest installment of the tournament, as domestic leagues take a break to allow the globe's finest to assemble in the Middle East.

There has been controversy surrounding Qatar ever since they were given the rights to host the 2022 World Cup in 2010. However, on the field, Sanchez Bas and his group of future history-makers have just attempted to give themselves the greatest opportunity of advancing out of Group A.

Facing Africa Cup of Nations champions Senegal and 2010 World Cup finalists The 50th-ranked Dutch team has won all four of their warmup matches since October, so they're ready for the baptism of fire that will be the World Cup.

Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and most recently Albania have fallen to Qatar's superiority in recent weeks, with star striker Almoez Ali netting the only goal against the latter, and the Maroon are now aiming to become the first World Cup debutants to win their opening match since Senegal beat then-defending champions France in 2002.

On the other hand, Sanchez Bas's team are hoping to avoid becoming just the second World Cup hosts to fail to make it out of the group - such a fate befell South Africa in 2010 - but success here would also see Qatar create history as the first AFC country to win their first-ever World Cup battle.

Ecuador was reportedly threatened with expulsion from the tournament after fielding an ineligible player in qualifying, joining Qatar as a country embroiled in controversy prior to the first ball being kicked at the World Cup.

Nothing came of it, and now the South American nation is getting ready to return to the game's greatest event after missing out on a spot at Russia 2018, although creating headlines at the World Cup has not been their forte thus far.

Three times (2002, 2006, and 2014) Ecuador has participated in the event, however they have never advanced past the group stage. Their best performance to date was in 2002, when they won their opening match and advanced to the round of 16.

Since the beginning of June, Gustavo Alfaro's men have played six games and have produced an impressive six shutouts, but they have only scored twice, with four of those matches ending in a scoreless draw.

The Tricolor's most recent scoreless tie came last Saturday between Ecuador and Iraq, and Qatar has previously hosted its South American rivals three times, registering one win, one draw, and one defeat against the side that will be determined to ruin the celebration.
