In the Sunday Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City and Manchester United square off against one another as two vengeful rivals with a desire for victory.

Since defeating Arsenal 3-1 on September 4, the Red Devils have not competed in Premier League matches. Prior to the international break, Pep Guardiola's team defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0.

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan celebrates scoring their first goal with Erling Braut Haaland, Rodri and Joao Cancelo on August 13, 2022

Erling Braut Haaland has another aim for the day. The 22-year-old, who has an incredible 11 goals for the Premier League season, added a second goal in a convincing 3-0 victory over Wolves after Jack Grealish had given his team the lead 55 seconds earlier.

When Nathan Collins was given a straight red card for an unjustifiably high tackle on Grealish, whatever chances Wolves had of making a stunning comeback were gone, and Phil Foden's goal in the 69th minute sealed the victory for the defending champions.

With that 3-0 victory, Pep Guardiola's team momentarily regained the lead in the standings. However, Arsenal's following win against Brentford by the same score put the champions in second position, one point behind the North London club.

In the North London derby on Saturday at noon, at least one of Arsenal or third-place Tottenham Hotspur will lose ground, which may give Man City the chance to recover first position with a 10th straight home victory in all competitions.

Man City are the Premier League's top goal scorers at home this season with 14 goals in only three games while giving up a joint-low two. Additionally, at least three goals have been scored in each of their past seven home victories in the top division.

The defending champions could not have been more prepared for this match, and neither could Man United, who would have rather that the international break hadn't arrived at the time it did as they look to continue their hot streak of play.

The Red Devils will play in their first Premier League match in over a month this weekend due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and her state funeral. Since their 3-1 victory over Arsenal, they have lost to Real Sociedad and defeated Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

Erik ten Hag was named the Premier League's Manager of the Month for September after leading his team to fifth place in the standings, five points behind Man City with a game remaining. During his time in charge, Old Trafford's fortunes underwent a dramatic turnaround, with four straight victories in the top flight.

Ten Hag might find success at the Etihad with a run of three straight wins away from home and three clean sheets, but no manager since Sir Alex Ferguson has been able to lead the Red Devils to victory in their opening Manchester derby.

Man City defeated Man United 6-1 overall in the 2021–22 season, handing their opponents a humiliating 4-1 loss at the Etihad back in March. However, no Premier League match has seen the away team triumph more often, 21 times to be exact.
