Preview: Paris Saint-Germain vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

Contrary to popular belief, these two European powerhouses have not met in a competitive match since the 1996 UEFA Super Cup, which Juventus won 9-2 on aggregate.

PSG's trajectory has shot tremendously upwards since 2011, when Qatar Sports Investments took control of the club and helped them acquire players like Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi.

The Parisians have gone close to winning Europe's premier tournament on several occasions, but have never been able to take home the trophy. In 2020, they lost the final to Bayern Munich by a score of 1-0.

Despite having a 2-0 aggregate lead with barely half an hour remained at the Bernabeu Stadium last season, they were eliminated by Real Madrid in the round of 16. This was PSG's second consecutive failure at the top level.

Former Lille manager Christophe Galtier replaced Mauricio Pochettino as PSG's head coach this summer, and the French club already appears to be a more well-rounded squad under Galtier's 3-5-2 system. They are now atop the Ligue 1 standings with a 5-1-1 record, having surpassed Marseille on goal differential after their 3-0 victory away to Nantes last weekend.

However, Galtier will be judged most harshly in the Champions League, as has been the case with every PSG manager in recent years. For the eleventh year in a row, they have been placed in Group H, along with Maccabi Haifa, Benfica, and their next opponents, Juventus. Making it through this group should not be too difficult, but the true test will begin in the knockout stages.
