Buhari’s anti-corruption drive excellent – EFCC boss

Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has praised President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption drive throughout his eight years in office.

Mr Bawa stated this,in an interview with journalists on Thursday at the passing out ceremony of the EFCC's Inspector Cadet Course Six 2022 at the Police Mobile Force Training College, PMFTC, Ende Hills, Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
The 115 cadets, 96 males and 19 females, completed their arduous nine-month training at the PMFTC.

He stated that the fight against corruption was not a simple endeavor, emphasizing that Buhari's government outperformed past governments in this regard.
"Of course, the president's anti-corruption effort is on top, and it has been tremendous."
"I was with him yesterday, and we showed him a graph of the increase in conviction we were able to secure under his leadership."
"In 2016, the EFCC recorded only 103 convictions; in 2022, we recorded 3,785, all credit goes to him." This represented a significant increase over the commission's conviction records from the previous year.

Earlier, while thanking Mr Buhari, he stated that the president had strengthened the commission in its drive and enthusiasm to cleanse the country of corruption, which had hampered the country's development potential.
"Since my appointment as Chairman of the EFCC, President Buhari has provided us with all necessary support and legislation, including the need to increase the commission's workforce."

"To demonstrate his commitment, the president signed three bills into law: the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022, the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022, and the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act of 2022."
"These legal tools against the illegal transfer of money and money laundering have helped the EFCC's conviction achievement," he remarked.

Mr Bawa stated that, notwithstanding its enforcement and prosecution experience, the commission has not abandoned its preventative duty in accordance with the strategic aim plan for 2021 to 2025.

According to the chairman, this includes boosting public participation in the battle against economic and financial crime.
As stated by him, in order to achieve this goal, the commission holds a virtual town hall meeting on the EFCC's Twitter handle every Wednesday in real time.
He stated that the EFCC's leadership role in law enforcement, notably against commercial and financial crimes, was no easy task.
Based on him, its officers abides by the basic values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and partnership in order to maintain this function.

Mr Bawa appreciated the 115 cadets' training, saying they had been turned from regular civilians into law enforcement and combat ready personnel.

"Before you today are officers drawn from every state in Nigeria, as well as the FCT, who came in not knowing what to expect after fulfilling the eligibility requirements during the recruitment exercise."
"During the training, these cadets received relevant academic knowledge from EFCC instructors in vocational studies, legal studies, financial studies, forensic, ICT, and general studies," he explained.
Despite the different obstacles, he observed that it had been a lengthy journey to get there.

"I am pleased to report that the cadets have been transformed and are ready to contribute to the fight against economic and financial crimes."
"I implore you all to be dedicated to the profession you have chosen."
"It is critical for you to understand that law enforcement, particularly in the field of combating financial crimes, is a critical national service, a career that takes years to build but only minutes to demolish," he stated.
