Lisandro Martinez was enraged after being removed from Man United's game against Newcastle.

Sunday afternoon at St. James's Park, Manchester United was defeated by Newcastle by a score of 2-0.

After suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow playoff hopefuls Newcastle United on Sunday, Manchester United fell to fourth place in the Premier League table.

The team led by Erik ten Hag had a golden opportunity to extend their lead over the Magpies, but they were soundly beaten on the road. Joe Willock and Callum Wilson scored for the home team, while the visitors could only muster one goal-scoring opportunity against the Reds' goalie.

United, winless in their last three Premier League games, have a chance to drop to fifth place by Monday night's end. If Spurs win against Everton at Goodison Park, they will move into first place in the table, ahead of Liverpool.

Here are four details that spectators of United's disappointing loss at Newcastle might have missed:

Ironic gripes from Newcastle's assistant coach

During the first few minutes of the game, Newcastle's assistant manager, Jason Tindall, frequently criticized United goalkeeper David de Gea for wasting time. The home team saw an opening whenever the Spaniard had the ball at his feet, but he was content to simply slow the tempo of the game. Meanwhile, Ten Hag was quick to praise the goalie for his work with the ball.

The Magpies' gripes bore a certain irony. The Reds manager, who had previously expressed concern over Newcastle's time-wasting tactics before the Carabao Cup final in February, did so again before Sunday's game. The Dutchman said Howe's men are notorious for 'delaying,' and he urged referee Stuart Attwell to keep the game moving by regulations.

Rashford stomps the ground with his foot.

The English national felt he was entitled to a free kick, but the referee ignored his protests, and play continued. United's leading scorer sat stunned for a while before getting to his feet. He threw his boot at the ground in disgust. His manager shared his anger at the situation. Ten Hag was furious that a free-kick had not been awarded to Rashford, and he made his displeasure known. Both the player and the coach had to get over their disappointment and move on because the home team had the better first half. Likewise visibly irritated were Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez.

Antony annoys United supporters.

To be fair, Antony was among the better players for United that day. He played with energy and outplayed Dan Burn for the majority of the match. Unfortunately for the visiting fans, his final ball was lacking as it has been in several of his Reds appearances.

The Brazilian attacker got the ball in a promising position not long into the second half. The former Ajax player, unlike on previous occasions, did not rush forward, instead allowing the Newcastle defense and midfield time to regroup. His final action before being taken off enraged Reds supporters at St. James' Park.

Reds benched Martinez, who was fuming.

The Argentine defender looked frustrated as he sat down on the United bench, though it was not clear whether he was upset about being substituted out for Facundo Pellistri or the team's disappointing loss. The center-back vented his frustration by slamming a chair.

The home team took advantage of a depleted defense after Ten Hag bizarrely substituted both Martinez and his center-back partner Raphael Varane. Gary Neville, a former player for the Reds, was perplexed by the decision, and it seems the World Cup champion was as well.
