Manchester United's newest player, Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, has been assigned the number 7 in honor of another Red Devils' player.
The No. 27 jersey, previously held by Fellaini, has been given to Weghorst.
Possibility of making his or her United debut
WHAT OCCURED? The club has given the Dutch striker the number 27 jersey that Marouane Fellaini wore from 2013 to 2019 and that was most recently worn by Alex Telles, who is on loan at Sevilla. While Weghorst has worn the number nine throughout his professional career (at clubs like Emmen, Wolsburg, AZ Alkmaar, and Burnley), he has never worn the number twenty-seven.
The bigger picture is that United's manager Erik Ten Hag has not yet confirmed if he would include the Dutchman, Weghorst, in his squad for the next Premier League matches after he was just assigned a squad number. The 30-year-old watched his new team's Saturday derby day triumph against rivals Manchester City and is eager to make his debut.
KNEW THAT? Upon the introduction of squad numbers, Gary Neville wore the inaugural No. 27 jersey from 1992 to 1994 before switching to his more famous No. 2 jersey.
IN WHAT DIRECTION WILL WEGHORST GO? For the first time since May of 2021, when he last played for Burnley, the Dutch attacker may get to play in a Premier League game when United takes on Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
